My journeys so far...
Salva Magaz is Hispano-Swiss born in Geneva from Spanish parents. Drawn from an early age to photography, he borrowed his father’s camera and became fascinated with a new world when he was 12 years old. At 18, he began traveling the world through Europe and Africa discovering a passion for travel photography.
In 1987, a first trip to Sri Lanka and China revealed his deep interest in Asian culture. A year later, a trip of several months in Asia leads him to discover the Tibetan community, which directs his path towards an intensive study of this culture and philosophy with regular stays in India, Nepal and Tibet.
For years he will follow different aspects of this culture, including meeting several times the Dalai Lama and many renowned Tibetan masters.
In 1998 he travelled through Asia for two years, returning to Europe from the Indian subcontinent, passing through Southeast Asia, Siberia, through China, Tibet, Mongolia and on to Europe, passing through the polar circle and covering tens of thousands of kilometres exclusively overland.
In 2005 he joined the TAG Press news agency in Geneva. He later worked as a photographer for the Catalan Agency CAGP in Spain.
From a young age he was inspired by photographers like James Nachtwey, Sebastiao Salgado, Eugene Smith and later by the photographers of VII Photo Agency. He then studied visual storytelling with Ron Haviv and Ed Kashi (photojournalists and co-founders of VII Photo Agency) in MasterClasses in Switzerland and Spain. Subsequently he participated in workshops on photojournalism with other VII photographers as well as Getty in Barcelona and London.
Magaz orients his photographic practice to lesser publicized societal issues, the behind the scene and groups of people or individuals that make the world more beautiful by their actions but remain invisible. Salva Magaz’s photography explores the world around him and infuses an altruistic approach to the world.
Salva Magaz es hispano-suizo nacido en Ginebra de padres españoles. Atraído desde muy joven por la fotografía, a los 12 años tomó prestada la cámara de su padre y quedó fascinado por un mundo nuevo. A los 18, empezó a viajar por Europa y África descubriendo su pasión por la fotografía de viajes.
En 1987, un primer viaje por Sri Lanka y China revela su profundo interés por la cultura asiática. Un año despues, un viaje de varios meses en Asia lo lleva a descubrir la comunidad tibetana lo que orienta su camino hacia un estudio intensivo de esta cultura y filosofía realizando estancias regulares en India, Nepal y Tíbet.
Durante años seguira diferentes aspectos de esta cultura, incluyendo el encuentro varias veces con el Dalai Lama y muchos maestros tibetanos de renombre.
En 1998 recorre Asia durante 2 años, regresando a Europa desde el subcontinente indio, pasando por el sudeste asiático, Siberia, atravesando China, Tíbet, Mongolia hasta llegar a Europa pasando por el circulo polar y recorriendo decenas de miles de kilómetros exclusivamente por tierra.
En 2005 se incorporó a la agencia de prensa TAG Press en Ginebra como fotógrafo asi como con la agencia catalana CAGP en España.
Desde joven esta inspirado por fotógrafos como James Nachtwey, Sebastiao Salgado, Eugene Smith y mas tarde por los fotógrafos de la Agencia VII. Entonces estudió narrativa visual con Ron Haviv y Ed Kashi (fotoperiodistas y cofundadores de VII Photo Agency) en MasterClasses en Suiza y España. Posteriormente participó en talleres sobre fotoperiodismo con otros fotógrafos de VII, así como de Getty en Barcelona y Londres.
Magaz orienta su práctica fotográfica hacia temas sociales menos publicitados, el detrás de escena y grupos de personas o individuos que hacen el mundo más bello con sus acciones pero permanecen invisibles. La fotografía de Salva Magaz explora el mundo que le rodea y le infunde un enfoque altruista del mundo.
Salva Magaz est un Hispano-Suisse né à Genève de parents espagnols. Attiré dès son plus jeune âge par la photographie, il emprunte l’appareil photo de son père et se passionne pour un nouveau monde à l’âge de 12 ans. À 18 ans, il commence à parcourir le monde à travers l’Europe et l’Afrique, se découvrant une passion pour la photographie de voyage.
En 1987, un premier voyage au Sri Lanka et en Chine a révélé son profond intérêt pour la culture asiatique. Un an plus tard, un voyage de plusieurs mois en Asie lui fait découvrir la communauté tibétaine, ce qui l’oriente vers une étude intensive de cette culture et de cette philosophie avec des séjours réguliers en Inde, au Népal et au Tibet.
Pendant des années, il suivra les différents aspects de cette culture, rencontrant notamment à plusieurs reprises le Dalaï Lama et de nombreux maîtres tibétains renommés.
En 1998, il parcourt l’Asie pendant deux ans, revenant en Europe depuis le sous-continent indien, en passant par l’Asie du Sud-Est, la Sibérie, la Chine, le Tibet, la Mongolie et l’Europe, en franchissant le cercle polaire et en parcourant des dizaines de milliers de kilomètres exclusivement par voie terrestre.
En 2005, il a rejoint l’agence de presse TAG Press à Genève. Il a ensuite travaillé comme photographe pour l’agence catalane CAGP en Espagne.
Dès son plus jeune âge, il a été inspiré par des photographes tels que James Nachtwey, Sebastiao Salgado, Eugene Smith et, plus tard, par les photographes de l’agence VII Photo.
